Аннотация: Актуальность настоящего исследования связана с интересом к развитию визуальной культуры в прессе Российской империи во второй половине XIX веке, когда наметился поворот в сторону синтеза различных средств для создания изображений (специальные авторские иллюстрации, репродукции знаменитых картин и скульптур, фотографии, пояснительныПоказать полностьюе схемы и чертежи), а также к исследованию характера и инструментов просветительской деятельности в России в разные эпохи. Исследование проведено на материале анализа архивной подшивки журнала «Нива» - одного из самых популярных иллюстрированных изданий второй половины XIX - начала XX веков - за 1882 год. Внимание к данному году связано с проведением Московской художественно-промышленной выставки, подробно освещенной на страницах журнала, что расширяет спектр иллюстративного материала до уровня всероссийской значимости. Методом исследования выступил количественный и качественный контент-анализ. По итогам исследования выявлены такие направления просветительской деятельности журнала «Нива», как знакомство читателей с выдающимися деятелями мировой культуры и искусства, знаковыми лицами политической жизни, учеными; знакомство с достопримечательностями Российской империи, Европы и Евразии; знакомство с картинами выдающихся мировых и российских художников, преимущественно на исторические темы, а также сентиментальной направленности (воспитание чувств): акцентировались описание и изображение быта и нравов простых людей; приобщение читателей к науке и техническим открытиям, в частности через иллюстрации доступных научных опытов. The relevance of this study is related to the interest in the development of visual culture in the press of the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th century, where there was a turn towards the synthesis of various means for creating images -author's illustrations, reproductions of famous paintings and sculptures, photographs, explanatory diagrams and drawings, and also to the study of the nature and tools of educational activities in Russia in different eras. The study was carried out on the material of the analysis of the 1882 archival filing of the “Niva”journal - one of the most popular illustrated magazines of the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries. Attention to 1882 is associated with the holding of the Moscow Art and Industrial Exhibition, which expands the range of illustrative material to the level of all-Russian significance. The research methods were quantitative and qualitative content analysis. Based on the results of the study, some areas of educational activities of the “Niva”journal were identified.
