Аннотация: Neuston are organisms associated with the surface layer of aquatic ecosystems and are composed of two subdivisions. Species living on the surface of water are referred to as epineuston, and those living below the surface layer are referred to as hyponeuston. These categories may consist of both microscopic and macroscopic organismsПоказать полностьюoriginating from the plankton community, the benthos, or terrestrial sources, and they may rest against or move across this air-water interface. The epineuston depend on the surface tension of the water to maintain their position on the surface, whereas the migratory patterns and life stages of the hyponeuston will determine their presence and duration near the surface layer. This is a very dynamic and unique region with the surface layer being subject to numerous physical forces that affect its stability and influence chemical reactions that occur in this region. In addition to neuston, various organic and inorganic particles may be concentrated on or just below the surface layer, producing a different environmental setting than at greater depths below the surface. Various collection procedures for the neuston have often provided different interpretations regarding its composition and representation in the water column.
