Аннотация: The article describes main aspects of creative activity of the artistic intelligentsia at the turn of XIX-XX centuries. The events of the 1st Russian Revolution, having demonstrated folk power, made intelligentsia change their attitude toward the folk. Folk ideas had been present at artwork of intelligentsia before, and a new twistПоказать полностьюand form of artistic expression was added later. Addressing folk theme, according to intelligentsia opinion, would help them to understand the folk soul and solve the problem of interactions between intelligentsia and the folk. Intelligentsia considered the history of Russia and the history of its folk as a whole, that is why addressing the past dominated in subjects of intelligentsia artwork. Attempts to develop a deeper understanding of folk world perception made intelligentsia pay more attention to folk art. Depending on their appreciation of art and aesthetic preferences, artists payed their attention to the things, that formed the basis of folk art: folklore, frescoes, icons, lubok. The processes, taking place in Russian artistic life, reflected in Siberian artistic intelligentsia works. Siberian intelligentsia, being in most cases first-generation, were less disconnected from folk, if compared with the intelligentsia, living in the central part of Russia. They saw devotion to the folk as their primary mission, and the folk were the main inspiration source for their artwork. The article describes the way the folk theme is presented in the artwork of greatest representatives of artistic intelligentsia, substantiates the role of the artwork and its significance for the development of culture in general, and shows its incapability to be widely understood by the folk.
